Hi everyone

I have owned a 35 gallon freshwater aquarium for close to 6 years now and I am thinking of making some changes to it so I can add some colour.

Currently, I have:
9 cherry barbs
9 white clouds
1 black moor
1 bristle nose pleco
1 female koi betta
4 neritina snails

My black moor is pretty old and I am trying to plan ahead to when he dies. I am thinking of adding some cichlids to the mix/changing to a cichlid tank but I am unsure about what would work or not.

Alternatively, I have been toying with the idea of a sorority tank to accompany Trudy, my female betta

Also, I feel like I would be satisfied with maybe one more group of small-ish, colourful fish

If you have any suggestions about what to do, I would love to hear them

Your tank is pretty small for cichlids, but a small grouping of German Blue Rams would probably work out fine. Bolivian Rams might work as well, but they grow a little bigger.

I’m don’t think that this setup would be ideal for German Blue Rams. They actually prefer temperatures to be in the lower 80s, which would clash with other tank occupants and their temperature requirements (the barbs, mountain minnows, and betta).

I’m on the pc. What about dwarf cichlids? How many do you think I could put given that overstocking is recommended? Is a pair too few? Three is too many?

Another attempt at adding photos

If your fish the same age as the tank your goldfish likely has plenty more life in him. They often live to 10+ years if they are well cared for
