I just discovered this formation in my 55G freshwater community tank last night and have no clue as to what it could be. Here is a list of my stock:

1 x Australian rainbow
2 x Blue gouramis
1 x Gold gourami
5 x Neon tetras
1 x Dwarf frog
1 x Betta
5 x Guppies
3 x Platys
1 x Cherry barb
2 x Albino corys
3 x Plecos
1 x Black skirt tetra
4 x Zebra danios
1 x Leopard danio

It looks grey, spongy, fibrous, with some light and dark spots in places. It is located at the front bottom corner of the tank and jammed between the glass, gravel, and rock.

My suspicion is mold growing on algae pellets but how come it wasn't there the day before? Doesn't mold need time to form over many days? Any food I put in my tank gets eaten immediately (or so I thought).

I have included pics from different angles so hopefully they will help.

Any suggestions? Appreciate the help!

P.S. I posted this under the breeding section also in case it's eggs but so far no one has been able to identify.

Looks gross, maybe fuzz around uneaten food. Or it could be a dead fish covered in fuzz.

Thanks Elephant & Brook!

I agree that it appears to be uneaten food b'cuz sometimes the algae wafer will land on the rock and the rock slopes down towards the glass. I've researched the breeding section and it doesn't look like any egg/larvae pics that are being posted, so just wanted a 2nd opinion.

Also, no fish appear to be missing so I don't think it's a dead fish. I guess I was just surprised how quickly this thing sprung up, virtually overnight!

Guess I'll get the little rotten thing out LOL. Thanks again! :)
