I have a school of 8 neon tetras. for some reason one of them likes to be by himself hiding behind a plant while the lights on on. Once the lights are turned off, he finally comes out of hiding and joins his sister and brothers. He also comes out to eat. Whenever I do a head count, I always count 7 and then upon further searching I find him behind the plants with the 3 cories. Is this normal behavior for a neon tetra?

I have a school of 11 nt's and I too have one that's a "loner." He's been that way since we got the nt's 3+ months ago. My gut feeling is that as long as he's eating and not showing signs of stress/disease, he's doing fine.

Same thing here, one of my neon tetras will leave the school and go hide in a dark cave for awhile. He will eventually rejoin the school and swim and eat so I consider it normal behavior. I think he just takes a break to chill.
