So i purchased an 8g fluval tank, it will be planted, filtered, heated.
I am wondering what is the best way to cycle a tank this size?

also what are some good plants for bettas?

Can you move some of the filter media from another of your existing tank?
For an 8g tank, I would go with plants like micro sword and dwarf hair grass that don't get very tall. It means less pruning time for you. I like baby tears too. :)

I agree^^
Just move some media over and it'll be instantly cycled (or at least very close). Bettas have a small bioload so only a small amount is needed. I like java ferns in Betta tanks. They like to hide and rest on/under the leaves.

Cryptorynes! Get more than one bunch and your betta would love to swim in between them all day
