new tank help

So I have several tanks but shan't to start this one as a cichlid tank! It is a 55 gal bow front have have everything needed filtration wise now I need to know the best substrate weather it be sand or rocks how to plant it and cichlids that are bright colored that will not out grow my tank. Also what kind of pleco aol new suit the tank with cichlids and how many...... Any help appreciated

Probably African cichlids !! They will eat plants though if you want plants. They are colorful and active . The like it rocky also.
