I cut the filter pad off of the plastic part of the filter and placed the pad in the additional filter slot. I threw away the plastic and the carbon. That should work shouldn't it?

Test results this morning..am-o, trites-0, trates-in between 0-5. Can my level of nitrates...which have never been above 5, handle a fully stocked 29 gallon? Or is my cycle still in the dreaded "fish in" drawn out, suspended development?
