Oil On Surface

I finally add some fish after about a 6 week cycle. However, after about 2 weeks, I have begin to notice an oily film on the surface of my water. I've been researching and believe it is because of overfeeding or they type of food. I've been feeding once a day, every other day and only a small amount (at least to me it is a small amount). Thus I think it is the type of food. Could one of these foods be the culprit that's contributing to the oil slick.

Tetra BloodWorms (Freeze Dried)
Omega One Shrimp Pellets
Tetra TetraMinPlus (Tropical Flakes)

I have a Fluval 406 with the outlet in the left back corner just below the surface pointed toward the middle of the tank. I'm thinking about adding a koralia nano 240 on the opposite side to move water across the top from right to left.

You might have biofilm forming. You will need some water agitation to stop it. Bubbles stopped mine.

I raised my outlet from the canister filter just a bit to help with surface agitation and within about 30 mins, the oil slick has gone away. The only issue is that now, my outlet is creating that waterfall sound so I'll see how long the family can deal with it before I have to figure out something else.

I believe your problem will disappear if you stop feeding shrimp pellets. No other processed fish food I've ever used has nastiefied a tank like shrimp pellets.

I have 4 running right now and I clean the sponge in them all weekly regardless of load.
Pretty nifty for those who never dream of a sump with real overflow..

I have owned both and the Toms is easier to adjust to water level.
