I am thinking about painting the back of my tank instead of putting up a background. Do I need to prime the glass first or can I just paint it? Any Ideas?????

No, you won't need to prime it. Just make sure it is as clean as you can get it. I would use Krylon Fusion black spray paint.

I just used a cheap bottle of black acrylic paint, took about three coats before I was happy with it, but like max said, just get the glass as clean as possible and you'll be set.

Make sure there are absolutely no water marks before you start painting. They will get locked between the glass and tank. I've used spray paint on empty tanks and a roller to apply acrylic paint to the backs of tanks. Both works well.
