Partial Water Change Question

If I do a partial water change of 20%, would I need to detoxify the water? I have a 10 gallon tank.

I always add dechlor just to be safe, it is cheap enough. Buy a bottle of prime the next you buy it. It will last you forever for that small a tank.

Every new bit of water you add needs to be dechlorinated, but not necessarily the whole tank.

If you do a water change in a bucket, you can dechlor. the water and pour it in

Is that what you mean by detoxifying- dechlorinating?

I havea 10 gallon also, its easy if you save and clean a couple gallon milk jugs, that way you can dechlorinate it or add whatever else it is your going to by per gallon

I would definately use dechlorinator. It's not as big of a concern if your local water company uses chlorine. But if they use chloramines, then you must use it, no matter how small the change.

definitely. like rich311k said, buy a bottle of prime and it'll last you years if you only change 1-2 gallons a week. literally.

or you could even buy cheap distilled water (walmart sells it for around 50c a gallon) and use that. the amount of water is so small that it won't be all that expensive to just use bottled water.

Some added info: not only are chlorine and chloramines toxic to your fish, they also kill your beneficial bacteria.

chloramine is bad for live plants too.

I wouldn't use distilled water. Could end up with ph fluxuations, which could kill the fish. Your tap water is buffered well enough to maintain a stable ph, but distilled water has very little buffering capability.
