plant leaves changing shape

i have mostly swords in my tank when i buy them they have a long stem and usualy and oval leaf but after a few months in my tank the new stem's that grow are just long stretched leaves.
was just wondering why this happens

You need phosphorus. Lack of phosphorus leads to darker leaves or poor growth of roots/leaves
