Question Platys Breeding

Hello all!

Just thought I'd share a little something. My brother has a 10g tank with plastic plants and his red platy and sunburst platy must have bred because there are 7 fry in the tank. The sunburst is the mother and most of the fry look more orange than red, but some of the fry have black fins which are characteristic to the red platy. Perhaps the sunburst was pregnant before he bought it though.. Has anyone else seen something like this happen?

-Daniel

Thanks! I may have to adopt a few, but the space I have left for more fish in my tank is wearing thin. Maybe I'll need to take them to the lfs or something..

Don't worry, both are acceptable. Congrats for the fry
Generally platies are "pre-hit" in tank stores with other males, so when you bring females home, you should expect about three batches of fry.

Yes but I am still confused as to how some of the fry have a reddish tint and some also have black fins, which are not characteristic to the mother sunburst/sunset platy.

There is no telling who the father of those fry are. The black fins are probably characteristic of the father. Most likely the female was pregnant when he bought her. That happens all the time!

Congrats on the fry! Platy fry (and most all fry) are really cute.
