Not all of them require lignin in their diet, but some do, so you have to know what kind of pleco you have - this is important and was stressed in Chile's OP.
I think the whole point is that many of us think of plecos like the garbage man - they are always there and do their job but you don't concern yourself with their needs. This is not the case, and we ought to regularly feed our plecos, even though we don't often see them out and about. It is a great idea for an article so I hope Chile will submit something. 8)
