I noticed that my pleco is racing to the surface for air. Is this normal? I've had him for a while and never noticed it.

How often? Plecos need air inside of them to stablize them. Notice how it swims upside down and sideways? Air is being used. Mine does this quite often, and unless other fish never do it, aeration is not the factor. He may also be looking for flakes or eating the film atop the water.

Excuse me, unless other fish do this also, poor aeration is not the factor. Sorry.
