What is this that keeps coming back in my filter??

It looks like plain ole detris to me.

Is that harmful or just annoyingly present?

it's just the junk the filter takes out of the water, if you want to lessen the amount that ends up on your bio media you could (depending on your filter type or model) place some filter floss prior to the bio media stage and hopefully catch more of the debris before it gets that far, if you can't then I really wouldn't worry about it to much

I could definitely add filter floss... I use an aquaclear 110 & 70

just go to a store with a crafts section like michael's, ac Moore or even wal-mart and pick up a bag of polyfill very inexpensive and effective

Ok awesome, I've heard filter floss is used by a lot of people hear and they all pretty much swear by it lol

just remembered the important part,make sure the polyfill you use doesn't have any anti-mold or mildew additives
