preparing drift wood

What's the best way to prepare it for a cichlid tank?

Soak it, boil it, scrub it, or run it through the dishwasher.

Right don't use anything. Just hot hot water.

Ok so I have it soaking in hot boiling water I notice the water getting brown is that gonna do that to my tank as well

Yep ... Tannins will turn your water tea brownish in color. Perfectly safe for fish. I boil DW over and over through 2 hrs. Dump water, refill boil, dump water etc.
