What is the proper way to maintain a quarantine or hospital tank when there are no fish?

Perhaps keep an extra sponge in the display tank then when you need to use the quarantine you can just fill it with tank water, switch the heater on and chuck the sponge in. There's no point in keeping it up and running if you are not turning over lots of new stock.
