I read in posts that you can use snails to move the gravel around a little to relieve pockets of bad stuff. My question is, with eels, can a person use feeder worms to do the same, such as red wigglers? Will they travel around enough to do the job until they are eaten?

gravel generally doesn't really need stirring as much as sand does.
a deep gravel vac once a month should be enough

Actually, that's what I was talking about, sand. I'm about to get a 55G aquarium now, and I already have the sand for it.

Eels will also take care of the stirring for you. I have two peacock eels that keep our 29 gal tank nicely stirred.

You could pick up some MTS if you want. A lot of LFS havemillions of them in their tanks and would be happy to give you some free.
