Rock and coral question

Hello, My friend has a salt water tank and he said I could have his coral and rock for my fresh water tank.

I don't know if his stuff has been used.

My question is: can I use this coral and rock for a fresh water tank? Do I have to treat this stuff just in case he has used it? Or should I not use this coral and rock at all?
 
Somebody more experienced might want to chime in, too, but I would think they would do funky things to your water chemistry. Anything you put into your FW aquarium has to be pretty inert so that it doesn't damage the mini ecosystem that's growing in there.
 
From what I've picked up round here is that most SW rock will slowly dissolve in FW setups which will raise the ph

Soaking would help release any salt, and that's about all of the help I can give.
