Can I use rocks from my yard to put into my aquarium? What do I clean them with?

Do you know what types of rocks? Typical natural backyard rocks are Quartz Stones (river rocks) granites, sandstones, limestones .... depending where you live.
Slates, Granites and Quartz Stones are aquarium safe ... just give it a good cleaning. I boil them in a pot ... it's best you heat them up with the water then let them cool back to room temp ... instead of just dropping them in boiling water.

I would never recommend boiling rocks. Absolutely never drop them into boiling water. Expansion rates for differing densities, or any crack, crevice, or fissure that has water in it, can create a situation where the rock can literally explode showering the room with shrapnel.
Using very hot water and a good brush without submerging the rock should be good enough.
