As for the bubbler, I'd probably run it 24/7 if you have no surface aggitation. And if you currently are not running CO2, an airstone would be a plus as well. Without aggitation, any plants will lower the CO2 levels below atmosphere levels, and adding the airstone will equalize the CO2 levels in the tank with the atmosphere levels. I'll be running mine in my planted tanks 24/7 from now on, except for the tank where I'm running my Emperor 280 HOB Biowheel, which gives aggitation as well. And I'm still able to maintain decent CO2 levels with my DIY system I just set up.
