I happen to live on a Puget Sound (saltwater) beach that is composed of all manner of different sized and colored gravels. In fact, we are rather reknowned for our gravel hereabouts. It's one of our major exports.

Is there anything terribly wrong with using some in a freshwater tank, providing I first 1.) sift it for size, 2.) hose it off well to remove all the lighter shells/debris, and 3.) boil it for sterilizaton? It sounds like a lot of work, but it wouldn't take more than an hour or two to come up with the requisite 40 lbs. From what I gather, the stuff you buy isn't all that easy either.

All input appreciated...

No problems but you may want to test and see if it alters your ph and hardness. I'd test your water out the tap and record the parameters then add it to a bucket full of the beach sand/gravel and test it every 24hrs for a few days to see.
