I've noticed that in most of my tanks, the fish are "awake" and freely moving by about 5 minutes after I turn the lights on. All except my neon tetras. They stay hidden in the plants, and their colors are much subdued until at least 15-20 minutes after lights on. It takes another few minutes after they leave cover for their colors to brighten, and they aren't interested in food until this happens. I guess I most closely relate to them: I have to sit and stare at my feet for awhile, before I finally stumble around the house drunkenly. Maybe I was a neon tetra in a past life.
