I have a guppie with a split in his tail the tail is about 15mm and the split is approximately 6-7mm. Is this normal wear and tear ?

Could be an injury from something in the tank. Could be that you have a nipper that injured the fish. At this point, just keep the water as clean as you can by doing more frequent PWC. You can use Stress Coat to help the fish with the healing process.
