Sponge filter question?

I have a few spare 40g air pumps. I was thinking about setting up a sponge filter in my 55g aquarium. Will one of my 40g air pumps be enough or should I invest in a 100g air pump? I'm going to be buying a large sponge filter from hikari (not sure how it's spelled) and I was wondering if I should get the better air pump as well?

If you wanted, you could presumably run both of your air pumps and link them both together to run to the sponge filter. The pumps are more rated for tank depth than actual gallonage of the water.
