Sponge or filter wool

I have an Oceanfree hang on filter on my aquarium. It has a sponge where the water passes from the suction section to the filter mediums section and 2 sponges in each compartiment of filters. The sponges are getting clogged and this reduces the amount of filtered water. I clean the filter every week. I was thinking in replacing the sponges with filter wool, maybe it will help with clogging. What do you guys think?
