Sponges and BB

Here's an alternative

Anything porous that water can run through will hold some bacteria. Albeit your sponge won't be that efficient for water to flow through. If you want a really good extra filtering media look at getting untreated pillow batting at Wal Mart or some cut-to-fit filter pad mtl. at Petco/smart. For about 6 bucks you can have a couple of years worth of media.
Here's a pic of what I found that works good and each piece you use can be flushed clean and reused many times. OS.

Ditto on using other, cheaper materials as suggested. However be very careful when using sponges meant for cleaning. Many of them are impregnated with detergents even if not advertised. Other are antibacterial, how I don't know, but kind of defeats the purpose.
