I think it's very wise to not have guppies, I have them and love them but I have about a 60 gallon that looks horrid because I have a divider in there do not get opposite sex guppies unless you are prepared and have an outlet to get rid of the babies when I say they breed well I mean in ridiculous amounts.
As for your dad only using conditioner that's great but with a new tank you really do need to know what your ammonia, nitrate and nitrite levels are. Especially with fish in the tank, also although everyone here says the strips are terrible and to some point I agree they are cheaper and may stop you losing so many fish. Setting up a tropical tank is not a cheap hobby.
I recommend like alot of other I would be doing 50% water changes until you can get sone testing done to know where your water is at.
