starter filter media/bacteria

how long would one need to run material in a filter to use as a starter for another aquarium? and what would be the best material to use? Carbon, sponge, etc.?

I think 4-6 weeks would be enough. Either bio media or sponge would work.

I personally would run it for two months, maybe longer. It's just to get it started though. As said before, a month or so is enough. I am a bit paranoid though.

It really boils down to personal preference, whatever you have, really. Just your filter cartridge would be fine. Doesn't matter excessively.
