starter fish?

Ok. Any fish you start with should be what you are planning on keeping in your tank full time. The starter fish idea is very out dated. It was when some 'hardy fish' where put in the tank to start the cycle. No water changes and the fish died or became permanently damaged from the toxic water. When the cycle was complete they where disposed of.
Fish in cycling when done correctly doesn't hurt any fish. Daily water changes have to be done to stop the ammonia and nitrite building to toxic levels.
Fishless cycling is dosing ammonia to add what the fish would usually add. Only a couple of water changes are needed.

I think he wants to do fishless. And yes you could get a pleco, but it depends what type you want ;)

ya i am thinking a fish less it looks like its cheeper and easier to do it that way anyway. how long does a fish less cycle take?

for a fish in water change for once a day how much water should you change like 20%

More, probably 40-50% A DAY. Fish in cycles are definatly not the thing to do IMO

Eh, anywhere from 3 weeks to over a month depending on some factors. (having established filter media in the tank, having a used filter on the tank , etc)

It took me about a month and a week. I did mine very slow and i think it was the right thing to do because i didnt loose a single fish. It takes some people longer

well the tank is my brothers old one which has this pink coral stuff on the pumps which he said it meant it was a healthy tank but the filter media basket and the filter media will be all new

They both take the same amount of time 4-8 weeks. Fish in maybe slightly longer than a fishless. The amount and size of PWC depends on how fast the ammonia builds up. How fast the ammonia builds up depends on how many fish, what kind and the size of the tank.

Here you go.

my brother started with the tank as a salt water then went to a freshwater the gave it to me and i will be using it as a freshwater

Haha okay gotcha! Well first thing you need to do is get that cycle started! Then we can discuss stocking plans ;)

Here you go.

28 gallon nano cube

Ya thats probably calcium... Thats what my guess is. It happens to everything that has been used. The filters that i own have that all over them, but you can remove it, its just hard
