Substrate Preferences for Cories

I'm considering getting 4 false julii cories for my 30g long that has 8 tiger barbs and 1 bnp. Do cories need sand? My substrate is smooth gravel about 3mm long at most.

They do prefer sand but smooth gravel should be fine. You want to avoid anything with jagged edges.
