Are you in UK?
JBL do a series of sump pumps that can be used submersed or externally and can be used as a powerhead too.
They are the 'ProFlow' series and carry a 4 year warranty. JBL do some quality kit.

Check into the new DC return pumps. BRS carries the SpeedWave DC pump in 3 sizes. They have 6 speeds, soft start, 10 minute feed pause and are supposed to be very quiet. They also run on less power.
