Swordtails
Anyone know anything about these fish cause i sure dont .... but i knew they were a community fish and my gf wanted them so i got 2 males and 2 females each of each pair of different color variants. They are being housed in my 29gal planted along with my other fish .... anything i should do or watch out for? .... i plan on moving them to a 10gal with 4 tetras once i get an ammonia situation figured out

They're fairly hardy, and tend to gobble up food pretty quickly. Thus they also tend to be a bit on the messier side. With 2 males make sure you have hiding places. One of them will become the alpha and tend to pester the other one if he doesn't have someplace to hide.

In my expeirence with swords, they produce fairly fast. The problem with your 2 male 2 female ratio is the males will pester the female to death. It is better to have 3 females to 1 male so the male doesn't stress the females out so bad. If there are plants and hiding places it won't be near as bad.
Oh, and if you want to raise the fry, plan on separating them because the adults love fry better than anything. |

Well it was either a bad fish or ur thing about pestering the female things happened cause i got home from work today and one of my females was dead .... so i may add some more females or just leave em be .... but i was a little suprised but i guess you cant have it perfect everytime

The males might not get-along with each other. One might chase the other around. I'd take one of the males back, or seperate him. Maybe pair each male with a female in seperate tanks.
And yes you WILL get lots of babies. They are live bearing fish and feed from all levels (top, middle and bottom.) They are great community fish and get along with most other community fish AFAIK. They will also graze on some of the green algae, but don't expect them to clean your tank. |
