Tank question

The filter on the back of the tank how far does that tube have to hang down into the tank and what can I do about plant particles going though that tube into my filter

Usually 2-3 inches from the bottom of the tank. Filters vary a bit though.

I have my tube about half way down maybe alittle more and I've seen people attach a sponge at the end of the tube will that work or is that not a good idea for the filter

Yes, that should work. I usually just use an Aquaclear media sponge and cut it to fit, then cut an x shaped hole in the middle to slip over the filter intake. This will keep most of the plant bits out of your filter. You'll need to clean the intake cover fairly often.
