Tankmates for an aggressive three dot gourami

I have a 4in three dot gourami which will be moving to a 40 gallon after Christmas and I need tank mates. The tank will have a sandy substrate with amazon sword and java fern. The middle of the tank will have a thick piece of driftwood for hiding. I wanted a rainbow shark but was told it would be too big. I would like 1 big "show" fish and maybe a couple of schooling fish.

You might be able to get away with a red tail shark since they are a little smaller than rainbows. Then maybe for schooling fish you could do Cardinal tetras or rummy nose tetras.
