I do assume my nitrates are high because I'm over feeding though... They look at me with sad eyes when they see me feeding the fry tank lol.. I can't help but give them some ;p better put them on a diet..

Maybe on a new tank (or not so new) there could be lots of little things that just weaken and add stress, until something (big or small) tips it over. I don't know, I tend to look/hope for that single answer.

It's interesting, a larger tank makes more sense as it will be more stable but what makes a tank 1 year old better than a recently cycled tank. And is it a gradual or sudden; lots of little things or some big things (like some fish survive, so the new fish think "well we'd better just pull up our socks.."
 
I have the same problem with mine every time I walk by or it I am messing with the plants they try to nibble my fingers! It totally tickles!
