Thinking of a diatom filter

Every time I do a water change or mess around with my plants, my tank ends up ful of tiny particles and honestly even once its all settled, my tank is never as clear as I'd like it. So I was thinking of getting a diatom filter to run when I do my weekly PWC.

Any thoughts or advice on these? I've never had one before.

While I've never used one before, Vortex filters seem to be the way to go. They have a good reputation and aren't too expensive.

If you have a spare Magnum laying around by any chance, you can make a DIY diatom filter simply with a micron filter and diatomaceous earth powder.

I do actually have the HOT Magnum with the micron filter. Its just a pain to actually get that thing sealed up to use. Not to mention I don't have room behind the tank for it to hang

I'm going to be in Big Al's area in a couple weeks, I'll have to run in and pick one up while I'm there. Anyone know if the Vortex D-1 will do the job for me?
