I used to have an issue with my featherfin coming out to eat with the rest of the hogs in the tank. Then, I decided to put the food into about 1/4 cup of tank water and garlic guard and let it soak for a few minutes. When I dump that into the tank, it spreads throughout the water column. He felt much more comfortable coming out because he didn't feel he needed to outcompete fish in his immediate area. After doing that for a while, his comfort level grew to the level where he now meets me at the glass.

That said, because of the other fish in the tank, I can't handfeed him as they will crowd him and he doesn't like that.
