Trying a new substrate
Has anyone ever tried to use mulch/bark pieces as a planting substrate? Is this a good or bad idea?[/b]

Yes, people do it, but it's peat plates (deteriorated mulch), (can be purchased in many stores) it needs to be weighted down by gravel/sand and will make the water acidic and colour the water with tannis (weak tea colour)..
I would not recommend using "Mulch" like you'ld buy at a garden center due to fertilizer and other potential contaminents. (ditto with bark) besides, weighing down all the little pieces could be interesting. |
