Types of critters
Hello, I am setting up a 55 [acronym:945d5371c7="Gallon"]gal[/acronym:945d5371c7] tank that will have live plnats in it. I plan on putting some fish in it, but I also would like to put other underwater critters like shrimp and snails. I was wondering what other sorts of freshwater critters would be good for a tank with live plants. Thanks.

Shrimp and African dwarf frogs are a good choice, unless you have big, aggressive, carnivorous fish that may see them as a snack.
[acronym:933b9f29f9="Freshwater"]FW[/acronym:933b9f29f9] crabs and lobsters are colorful and interesting, but they sometimes prey on small fish. Apple, mystery, and ramshorn snails are interesting too, but they may eat certain plants - you'll need to research this. |

While I have heard of success stories with plants and snails, I have heard a lot more horror stories. It's just too likely that the snails will eat the plants if you ask me. Shrimp and frogs would be pretty cool.

I have 6 planted aquaria and have snails in 3 of them (they were accidentally brought in with the plants). The snails got out of hand in all three until I got some dwarf loaches for two of them and physically removed the snails in the third. Amano shrimp might be good for algae control although I prefer otocinclus and/or SAEs.

Thanks for all the replies. I had a tank set up with a crayfish once, and he cut all my plants. Would a fw crab do this also or uproot them? Also, is there some kind of fully aquatic newt or lizzard that i could get? Thanks again.
