Umm do shrimp eat wood?

So I got some amano shrimp to go in my tank. The shrimp have made their home in a hole in the piece of driftwood in my tank and 95% of the time they seem to be eating directly off of the driftwood. Are these guys actually eating the wood or eating something off of the wood that I just cant see?

They are eating micro organisms and algae off of the wood.

theyre either eating algae or some food that is on the wood... never heard of them eating wood

Just wanted to double check that. I though if they were eating algae I should at least be able to see what they are eating.

get a macro lens or microscope you will then might be able to see it.
