Well my eheim 2213-37 classic series canister came in the mail today and after soaking myself it is up and running. Should I leave my aqua tech filter going to help with getting/keeping the whole tank cleaned up?
My catfish isn't so happy about me sticking my hands in his tank.

A word of advice on the aquaclear (I have a thread about this somewhere) if the filter medias are packed too tightly you may have a problem where there is a bit of overflow on the suction side (depending on your tank lid this may or may not be an issue) because the filter can't pump through the media completely.
I solved this easily by putting less media in, I just have the sponge and biomax...I figure that a 70 gal capacity filter is above and beyond what I need for my 55 gallon planted so having 2/3 of the media capactiy filled doesn't seem to be an issue. Other than that I wouldn't buy any other HOB filter than an aquaclear. |

I just had the cheap aqua-tech HOB and trust me, too much media will never be that filters problem... But thanks for the heads up for when I get one! (I plan on "expanding" my 10 gal. into a 29 one day and i'd get a good HOB before a cannister for that job.)

If your looking at a serious live plant tank, I would highly suggest a canister. Its not just about the filtration in a planted tank, its also about the CO2. CO2 is out gassed by heavy surface movement which is caused by the HOB style filters. A canister filter can be put below the surface to minimize movement on the top. You do want a small amount of movement to bring in oxygen and prevent protein films but you can aim the canister output slightly upward to achieve a very small ripple.
I think you made a good choice with the eheim. I use the Rena XP2 and it works great on my 55 planted. |
