Just as a curiosity I have many streams and ponds near my home, would it be doable (but not necessarily advisable) to use that water for a tropical aquarium - assuming I raise it to the proper temp - or would there be too much of a consideration for disease, foreign bacteria, etc... ?

I don't know whether it would be fine or not, but I know it would be a lot more work hauling all that water to and fro. I get my water out of my bathroom tub, as I can control the water temperature somewhat and get a good rate of flow. I don't have to leave the house, and don't have to lug the 5-gallon bucket more than oh 30 feet? I'm not sure if a Python type hose would be able to siphon the water from the water source to the tank though. Maybe a pump could. I would be concerned with foreign particles, parasites, and maybe even small hitchhikers.
