I remember reading something about sand developing gas pockets that are harmful if disturbed. I've got some cories in there. 20 lbs of sand in a 10 gallon tank. will be lightly planted shortly. possibly snails?

Malaysian Trumpet Snails are your best bet. They'll burrow through the sand.

Helpful little guys, don't see them often as they tend to hide. I got lots and lots of them in my tank-- got one or two as hitchhikers and voila.

This.

You could probably ask for some in the barter forum and get them for the cost of shipping.
