Yes the baking soda will have an almost instant effect on your PH. Within a half hour what you get is what it is going to be. I add it with every water change.

How much do you add? Do you add it to the water first or straight to the aquarium?

I add a 1/2 a teaspoon per bucket (5 gal) of water I change. I put it in the bucket before pouring it in.
