What is in your canister?

[Listed by media bay]

Eheim ECCO 2235

Top - Crushed Volcanic Rock / Crushed Volcanic Rock
Mid - Filter floss / Fine Filter Pad
Bottom - Coarse Filter Pad / Coarse Filter Pad

I am thinking about trying the Eheim reccomend layout of:

Top - Fine Filter Pad / Ehfisubstrat
Mid - Ehfisubstrat / Ehfisubstrat
Bottom - Ehfisubstrat / Coarse Filter Pad

This would double the ammount of Bio Filtering area, but less mechanical. I figure I am overkill on the mechanical area, and since you can never have enough bio area, it would help. What does everyone have their canister's filled with?

fluval 404

chamber 1+2 = empty

chamber 3 = bio ring dealies

chamber 4 = filter floss

I used to run 1+2 with lava rock until I discovered the rocks were the cause of a phosphate issues... so now they're just empty

my plants handle almost all the filtration for the tank, the filter is just for straining out the large bits and moving the water around!

I'm new to the aquarium world and just starting my tank but I have 2 Rena xp3's, using only one right now with an Emperor 400 since there are only 7 fish in the tank (130Gal). I will be transitioning the Emperor out when I add more fish and replace it with the 2nd xp3. I'm justing using what was included in the box. The 3 filter pads, I believe 1 is fine and two are coarse, the charcoal bag, and ceramic rings that came as an extra in the box. Can someone give me a quick overview of what other filter media I can use and what its specific benefit is? Thanks.

I have an xP3, I use the coarse and then fine sponges in the bottom basket, crushed lava rock in the middle basket, and a fine sponge and fine filter pad in the top basket.
