I believe it is one of the smaller Cichlids from S. America but I am not sure exactly which one. I can tell you better what it's not. lol

Looks like a Kribensis, Pelvicachromis pulcher .

The name was on the tip of my tongue so I had to spit it out. 99.9% sure it's a checkerboard cichlid, probably female or juvenile. Lyretail Checkerboard Cichlid (Dicrossus filamentosus or filimentosa.) You can read more about it here: Checkerboard Cichlid (Dicrossus filamentosa)

I knew I had seen them before in shipments from S.A. but they always came in as an extra fish in another type of fish load. I had the name in my head but just had a bit of trouble getting it from my head to my fingers to type. That's the price you pay for getting old. They are definitely a cool fish for sure. Good luck with it.

I hope to order them once my planted tank has established. Those with apistos and a gold nugget pleco to round it out. I had no idea where to start but you got it dead on!

They are a common by catch with cardinal tetras. Cool little fish.
