Whats this on the dec in the tank?

Can anyone help? This is my sisters tank. She has put a live plant in her tank and now all her dec's in the tank have got a brown thing on top of them.

Just algae, keep up with the water changes and cleaning the decor periodically and you'll be fine lol.

+1 looks like diatoms it's perfectly normal. As Matt said. Water changes and cleaning of your decor will aid in it dissipating(spelled right?)

Again it's another one of my sisters tank and was given it off a friend.

Can platy's be cold water fish as well? She got given them with the other tank & they were in cold water.
 
She has put a heater in it and turning the heat up slowly, she was told that she can do this in her LFS, that's why I was wondering if they was platy's as who ever had them 1st had them in cold water.
