My fish had ich a few weeks ago and have been improving since dec. 28. when is it okay to turn the heater down and the disease won't come back? I want to make sure I don't leave it on hot too long and the fish don't like it or the diseases become used to it.

Ich will not get used to high temps; it kills them.
How long have the fish been symptom free? The life cycle of the parasite includes leaving the host for a bit only to become free swimming in search of a new host.
Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will chime in with more specific answer.

improving since dec. 28, completely symptom free since dec. 31. Did a 1/3 water change on both those days.

Around two weeks to 10 days seems to be quoted.

I had one spot hang around for a week even at high temps so would think two weeks is a good period. Reduce temp lower slowly.

Watch for secondary bacterial infections.
