White stringy growth, please help!

Can someone please help teach me two things 1) what it is I am doing wrong 2) and how I can fix my problem?

I have stringy white growth coming up from the gravel in my tank and I am perplexed as to what it is and how to correct it. I have added plecos and spiny noses but they do not seem to be attacking the growth.

I suspect it is uneaten food decomposing. Vacuum the bottom. Catfish or snails won't touch it. Don't overfeed.

I actually gave that a try and it did remove most of it. I also did a 33% water change and will check the filters this weekend to ensure the filter floss is not clogged.
