why do plecos change color?

it freaks me out that they get so white, makes me think he is dead/ dying

my old common use to do this too, I thought something was wrong with him so I rehomed him.

why does this happen?
 
Sometimes it's a sign of stress ( poor water quality etc), but often they will change colour just to hide, or if they are in a bad mood

or hes trying to be a Chameleon Marine
 
why do they change color?

because they can...... :cool:

Although our plecos stay relatively dark, I've heard many others say theirs go through camouflage to match their surroundings.
